Northern Michigan University’s College of Technology and Occupational Sciences invites applications for an Electrical Line Program Instructor. This is a three year term position at the rank of Instructor-TAS to begin in August 2018. This is a campus-based position.
Duties and Responsibilities: Develop and teach undergraduate courses for the electrical line program. Course topics that will be taught include: Fundamentals of Electricity, Electrical Formulas, Line Electrician Field Practice, Applied Electricity for Lineperson, Electrical Line Safety, Construction Standards, and Truck Driving.
Additional responsibility include assessment of student learning outcomes, student advising, committee assignments, course development, professional development, application of laptop computers in the learning environment, service to the department and university with selective program leadership responsibilities, participation in extra-curricular service opportunities, program of scholarship, and perform other assignments per departmental needs.
-High school graduation or equivalent.
-Possess a valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License.
-Must have completed one year of industry work experience beyond the four-year earned apprenticeships and attained journeyman line electrician status.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:
-Ability to obtain a CDL Instructor Certification for Michigan.
-Thorough knowledge of all phases of electric distribution and transmission work procedures and safety rules, electric distribution standards, applicable state electric codes and statutes, and underground facilities and their purpose.
-Strong understanding of electrical theory and ability to analyze and troubleshoot electric circuits. Electrical and mechanical aptitude.
-Ability as a trainer and leader, capacity for responsibility and decisions making.
-Diplomatic, cooperative, and able to work well with student trainees, other instructors, and the public.
-Ability to operate all types of electrical tools and equipment and to drive large trucks.
-Ability to perform occasional heavy lifting and/or carrying of 50 to 100 lbs. and frequent lifting and/or carrying of up to 50 lbs.
-Ability to see at 20 feet or more, with depth perception and field of vision.
-Ability to work outdoors in extreme weather conditions and within confined spaces for sustained periods.
-Ability to work aloft various poles, towers, aerial lifts, scaffolds, ladders, buildings or other structures for sustained periods.
-Ability to incorporate application of laptop computers in the learning environment.
-Good oral and written communication skills.
-Effective collegiality and interpersonal skills.
-Good time management skills.
-Ability to perform the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodations.
Additional Desirable Qualifications:
-Collegiate teaching and/or industry training experience.
-Community and/or civic leadership within area of expertise.
-Professional credentials, licenses and certifications.
